Department of Physics
The Department of Physics at National Central University was founded in 1968. The graduate program followed soon afterward with the establishment of the requirements for the degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. Most recently, in 2004, the graduate institute of Biophysics was founded (currently the only one in Taiwan). We have 32 full-time faculty members, and 14 adjunct faculty members from other well-known institutes. At present, we have 218 undergraduate and 148 graduate students.
NCU Physics is one of the top physic departments in Taiwan, with excellent teaching and research programs. The number of research papers published in Physical Review Letter is the top two in Taiwan. The impact factor per paper is the highest in Taiwan. In addition to regular funding, the department also receives funding for the “5-year 5-billion-leading-university project” from the Ministry of Education. Therefore, our students obtain rich teaching and research resources. Our research covers most fields of physics, including condensed matter physics, high energy physics, gravity, plasma physics, atomic/molecular physics, laser physics, high-field physics, astrophysics, and bio- and soft matter- physics.
Some physics graduates choose to pursue further studies after graduation. They are admitted to graduate programs at both local and overseas universities including Stanford, Caltech, Berkeley, UCLA etc. Others have developed careers in areas such as high-tech industry including TSMC, UMC… etc.
The department provides undergraduate and graduates programs emphasizing the training of independent thinking and problem-solving. Besides traditional core courses like classical mechanics, electrodynamics, thermal physics, quantum physics, and elective courses in high energy physics, gravity, optics, condensed matter physics, soft condensed matter, complex systems and biophysics, the emphasis is made on encouraging students to take independent study and directed study with faculty in the department. Through those one-to-one directed research experiences, students have the advantage to conduct frontier researches in the research groups. Besides programs in physics, the department also offers interdisciplinary programs in astronomy, life sciences, and environmental science.
