Graduate Institute of Statistics
The Institute of Statistics at NCU, founded in 1979, offers doctoral and master of science degrees. To advance the development of statistical disciplines and to promote their wide applications, the institute is devoted to the training of students’ statistical expertise and to research into new statistical theories and methods.
The institute offers both theoretical and applied courses for Master students, including the required courses in Mathematical Statistics, Statistical Practice , Regression Analysis, and Statistical Computing, as well as many elective courses that cover four important research areas including Biostatistics, Industrial Statistics , Finance Statistics and Big data. The master’s program in Financial Engineering is the first joint program in the nation co-sponsored by the Department of Finance, Mathematics and the Institute of Statistics. Moreover, cooperated with Department of Computer Science & Information Engineering, the Institute offers students the Big Data program to pursue knowledge and techniques of data science. The Ph.D. program emphasizes the theoretical training in statistical theory. The required courses include Statistical Inference I&II, and Advanced Probability I&II.
The institute now has nine faculty members. Our faculty conducts research across the spectrum of statistical science from foundations of inference to the discovery of new methodology. They actively participate in various research projects and have many high-quality publications in related fields.
Most of our PhD graduates choose to pursue their career in Universities and research institutes. Our MS students have found jobs in various sectors including education, banking and insurance. The majority of them joined the high-tech companies in the northern Taiwan areas. Some of our graduates are also admitted to doctoral degree programs at both local and overseas universities.
