Professor Ching-Cherng Sun, Chair Professor in the Department of Optics and Photonics and recipient of the SPIE’s A. E. Conrady Award in Optical Engineering, has also demonstrated a remarkable talent for literary writing. On May 30, 2026, a book launch was held at No. 296, Section 1, Dadaocheng, Taipei to celebrate the publication of his latest novel.

Set in Dadaocheng, Taipei, in 1920, during the Japanese colonial period, the novel tells a moving love story shaped by the social constraints of its time. Against the backdrop of the conflict between human greed and the nobility of the human spirit, the protagonists ultimately find fulfillment in love. The story vividly portrays the loyalty, compassion, and deep sense of righteousness that characterize the Taiwanese people, while reflecting the glorious history of Dadaocheng as Taiwan's most prosperous rice trading center. Rich in historical atmosphere and emotional depth, the novel invites readers to reflect upon the past and inspires boundless imagination.
