Department of Optics and Photonics

The Department of Optics and Photonics (DOP), the only one department in Taiwan that focuses primarily on OPTICS, offers the most comprehensive courses and is particularly devoted to the research topics on OPTICS. The research topics at DOP cover a wide range of basic science and applications in world-leading dynamic holography, quantum optics and communication, thin-film optics, photonic crystals, microelectromechanical systems, micro-/nano-optics, optical information, nonlinear optics, metamaterials, artificial intelligence, AR/VR/MR technology, liquid crystal photonics, color science and engineering, optical storage, display technology, solar photovoltaics, solid-state lighting, biophotonics and bioimaging, and others. DOP continuously adheres to the research topics to narrow the gap between industry and academia. Additionally, DOP also connects various resources from Government-Industry-University-Institute worldwide to enhance the capabilities of theoretical and experimental research.

Graduate Institute of Statistics

The Graduate Institute of Statistics was established in 1979, offering master's and doctoral programs. The core philosophy of the institute is to equally emphasize both teaching and research, fostering students' independent thinking and innovation. The teaching and research areas are extensive, including theoretical statistics, biostatistics, clinical trials, industrial statistics, financial statistics, applied probability, spatial statistics, data science, and more. The institute has outstanding faculty and a well-rounded learning environment, encouraging students to participate in domestic and international academic conferences and collaborate with industry and medical institutions to cultivate various professional talents. Students in the institute receive scholarships or research assistant salaries, making it the best choice for pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in statistics.

Graduate Institute of Astronomy

The Graduate Institute of Astronomy, established in 1992, was the first institute of astronomy in Taiwan, with the goal to cultivate research and education scholars in astronomy. The Institute offers the most complete and rigorous curriculum of astronomy and astrophysics, with all courses run in English and at international standards.  Core courses include Stellar Structure and Atmosphere, Stellar Formation and Evolution, Galactic Astrophysics, Large-scale Structures and Cosmology, Observational Astronomy, Theoretical Astrophysics.  In addition, there are advanced selective courses in radio, X-ray, and high-energy astrophysics, variable stars, interstellar medium, and solar system astrophysics, comets and asteroids with emphasis on theories and hands-on training on computer programming and instrumentation.  The faculty and students are actively involved in international consortiums such as ZTF and ALMA, and make competitive use of the most advanced observing facilities worldwide, in compliment to the telescopes at Lulin Observatory operated and used by the Institute, to conduct forefront research topics. The institute is currently establishing a two meter telescope in Mexico National Observatory and participate Rubin Observatory sky survey project. It can be expected that Graduate Institute of Astronomy will play important role in time domain astronomy in the international astronomical society.

Research center

Center For High Energy And High Field Physics

Center For High Energy And High Field Physics has been actively involved in the AMS experiment on the International Space Station and the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider for an extended period. It is one of the major high-energy research teams in the Asia-Pacific region and Taiwan. In the fields of high-energy and gravitational theory, it possesses significant expertise. The center has constructed the only 100-megawatt high-field laser in Taiwan, and its beam quality and stability are the best in the world among similar lasers. This facility has attracted research teams from the United States, France, and others for collaborative projects, resulting in groundbreaking achievements.
